As I’ve mentioned before, we homeschool our children. Our local community college has a program that allows homeschooled high school students to take classes. They earn college and high school credits at the same time. To sweeten the deal, the classes are offered at a steeply discounted rate!
I knew I wanted my children to participate in this program. They can graduate high school with an associate’s degree! How awesome is that? My daughter turns 15 this year, and she is finally eligible to start attending classes in the fall.
Last month, my daughter and I attended a webinar to learn more about the program. The presenter was excellent, and I was so excited to get started! In my enthusiasm, I forgot that my daughter is prone to anxiety. She was feeling very nervous about this new adventure.
After talking it over, we decided to start off small. During her first semester, we are only going to sign up for online courses. I think this will make her more comfortable with the idea of attending college, while also building her confidence. I know she is ready and capable, but I want her to feel that way too.
I am excited about this opportunity. If my daughter can complete her general studies at a community college, it will drastically cut down on the overall cost of her bachelor’s degree. As a parent, I don’t want her to start her adult life with a ton of student loan debt. By going down this path, we can help her graduate debt free.
